After weeks of rumors regarding Dug McDaniel’s status, we finally have a bit of clarity on his standing for the winter semester.
McDaniel will serve a six-game suspension, only for road games, according to his story post on Instagram.
Shortly after, Juwan Howard released the following statement:
“We have very high standards within our program, culture and university. Serving as mentors, we need to set the standards and pathways for our young men to succeed.
“Beginning with our game at Maryland, Dug McDaniel will not travel to road games until further notice. “Dug will dress for home games, however, when we are away from Ann Arbor, he will work towards meeting several academic goals he has set and needs to meet.
“While I am disappointed, this is not something we take lightly. This is an important step for Dug and his success as a student-athlete.
“Going forward we will not have further comment.”
That means McDaniel will miss road games against Maryland, Purdue, Michigan State, Nebraska, Illinois, and Northwestern. Five of those six games are against teams currently projected in the NCAA Tournament field.
McDaniel is averaging 17.8 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game and is one of the most improved players in the country. He leads Michigan in points, minutes, assists, made threes, and steals per game.

From Dug’s Instagram himself… maps with an update I heard today that implies he’s “on probation” but not ineligible for the whole semester following make-up work

The hilarity of this being the most confusing outcome possible with little to no answers that make sense is so on-brand for this program!

Absolutely incomprehensible. Par for the course for the 2023-2024 Michigan men’s basketball team.
