After Michigan coach Juwan Howard was relieved of his duties as the Wolverines’ men’s basketball coach, former FAU coach Dusty May was named as his replacement. This puts May’s players in a tough position: do they stay at the school that they committed to, or do they follow their coach halfway across the country?
For freshman guard L.J. Cason, his decision was a ‘no-brainer.’
The Florida native committed to FAU in August of 2023. Hailing from the small Victory Christian Academy in his hometown of Lakeland, Cason didn’t receive much exposure. But May and assistant coach Kyle Church – who also followed May to Michigan — were hooked on Cason.
“I watched (May) through the (2023 NCAA) Tournament, that was a big eye-catcher,” Cason said on the Defend The Block podcast. “Then he started recruiting me, and I took visits and watched (FAU’s) practice and watched them throughout the year, and they just play so hard. … I knew that if I was in that environment, I’d be great. And then him bringing me over, giving me the opportunity — a coach that believes in you, I feel like that’s the biggest thing in recruitment.”
