Michigan’s 75-63 win over Virginia Tech wasn’t always pretty, but the Wolverines handled their business in the second half to advance to Wednesday’s title game in Fort Myers. It was another great defensive effort and a significant victory for a group still finding their footing on offense.
It was a big night for Roddy Gayle Jr., Rubin Jones and LJ Cason, and all three are featured in today’s edition of five takeaways from the win.
1. No answer for Roddy Gayle
Roddy Gayle Jr. had his best game in a Michigan uniform on a night when the Wolverines needed it. He finished with 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a block in 30 minutes for his second consecutive KenPom MVP honors.
Virginia Tech coach Mike Young admitted the Hokies had no answer to slow him down.
“Roddy, who we played against last year in the NIT, was a load,” he said. “We didn’t have a match up for him, which is pretty evident with him touching us up for 20.”
