Michigan won its Big Ten opener at the Kohl Center on Tuesday night in a gritty road effort. The Wolverines weren’t perfect and their perimeter players struggled but the inside-outside 7-foot combination of Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin carried the day with 44 points combined.
Here are five takeaways from Michigan’s most impressive win of the season.
1. Michigan’s trust in Vlad Goldin pays off
Vlad Goldin has had a slow start to the season, but his last two games have been his best at Michigan. He had another slow start on Tuesday, making 2-of-7 shots in the first half, but finished with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting and five rebounds.
Goldin is his harshest critic, and he’s battling some frustration with some of his close misses early this season.
“I missed a lot of wide-open shots, but I’m gonna keep saying thank you for my team,” Goldin responded when asked why the two-big combination worked so well. “Thank you for believing in me, finding me, and giving me looks because when I doubt myself, they don’t doubt me, and that gives me so much more confidence just to play for these guys.”
