Joe Jackson joins the pod to preview Friday night’s battle between Michigan and Purdue at Mackey Arena. The conversation hinges on both ball screen attacks — Danny Wolf with Vlad Goldin and Braden Smith with Trey Kaufman-Renn. We start out by outlining what makes each two-man game so dangerous before hypothesizing how each team might try to do to slow down the other.
Make sure to read Joe’s in-depth breakdown of Danny Wolf’s pick-and-roll game, featuring a film study that cataloged every ball screen play the 7-footer has executed this season.
The podcast is available everywhere you listen to podcasts (YouTube will be coming soon).

We get to this in the middle of the pod, but I’m fascinated by who Wolf/Goldin guard in this one and how U-M handles it.

PU Coach Matt Painter’s take on the 4/5 ball screen is in this interview:

Painter gets a lot of love from Michigan basketball fans, but it is well deserved. It is so nice to hear from a coach who is so successful and secure that he can just talk to the media directly and say things about other teams that is not hyperbolic gamesmanship.

That was interesting conversation. I think having Wolf on TKR makes sense. Especially with Vlad being in position to help if TKR just posts up. I know Purdue can just do some picks to get a switch they like prior, but I feel like it could give us the best defense against the Smith TKR pick and roll. This is really going to be interesting to see which team can get more stops.

I’m def terrified of Purdue using our switching to get Wolf off of TKR and then he just buries whatever poor guard gets the switch.
