John Beilein met with the media on Friday afternoon to preview Michigan’s weekend game against Maryland (12:00 p.m., Saturday, FOX) and address his ejection on Tuesday.
Here are the most important things the head coach said (and why they matter).
On his ejection
“I had several conversations (with the league office) via text, via phone, whatever… I think we’ll have to wait another 37 years before you see that. You’ll have to wait a couple of years before you see another technical, let alone that. But there’s a lot of surprise to the whole deal and what happened happened and it’s unfortunate.”
“When I receive a technical, that’s probably when it’s probably most dangerous. If I receive a technical, I want to know why right away, and my mother’s Irish side comes out of me a little bit. I try to avoid those like the plague.… I have to be better than that. I’ve gotta be better than officials, and I pride myself in doing that, but I wasn’t.”
“I think we educate our officials and we can work at that to say this should be a call, this shouldn’t be a call. There’s going to be missed calls. If there are egregious ones they have to be addressed in a different manner. The coaches always have to answer this, the officials don’t. That’s a difficult thing.”
