Four-star guard Joseph Hartman is headed to Michigan, he announced today.
Hartman is a 6-foot-5 guard from Gainesville, Florida, who chose Michigan over Minnesota, Iowa, Dayton, and Butler. Hartman is ranked 77th overall according to On3’s Industry Rankings and is a consensus top-100 recruit.
The top-100 prospect is Michigan’s fourth pledge in the 2026 class, joining top-40 forward Quinn Costello, under-the-radar wing Malachi Brown, and 7-foot-2 Danish big man Marcus Moller.
Here’s a full breakdown of the new Michigan guard, an assessment of his game, and how he fits in at Ann Arbor.
Basics & Info
Hartman is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard from The Rock School in Gainesville, FL. He’s the son of a coach, with his dad (Carlin) serving as Florida’s associate head coach. From the outset, the family decided it would be best for Hartman not to play for his father.
“My dad asked questions around the industry, and he talked to a couple of coaches, who coached their sons as an assistant, and they said it’s just difficult. Me and my dad just thought the best course was that it would be best for me anyways to move away from home and get something new.”
“Coach (Todd) Golden and I, we’re really good friends and cares about Joseph and cares about our family,” Carlin Hartman told The Sun. “Things can get a little muddy and I didn’t want to put that kind of pressure on my son with me as an assistant on the roster.
“At the end of the day, as much as I love my job, I love my son even more.”
The Michigan staff first started recruiting Hartman when they were at Florida Atlantic, actually hosting him on his first unofficial visit when he was a sophomore in high school. The Wolverines re-entered his recruitment in late July, offering him a scholarship on July 29th following his performance on the Adidas 3SSB circuit.
Hartman averaged 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game on the summer circuit. He shot 50.6% from the floor, 46.6% from three, and 78.3% at the stripe.
With The Rock School, Hartman averaged 18.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4 assists per game as a junior, shooting 54% on twos and 36% on threes (6.7 attempts per game) and 74% at the stripe.
Hartman took official visits to Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Butler, and Dayton. The Golden Gophers were viewed as Michigan’s chief competition in his recruitment, with the Wolverines sealing the deal during Hartman’s final official visit.
Hartman’s national ranking has improved steadily throughout his college career. A year ago, he was ranked in the 130s, he climbed into the top-100 after a strong spring, and then crept all the way into the top-80 after his performances in July.
