Diggy Coit buried three off-the-dribble 3-pointers before the first media timeout. Michigan missed 11 dunks and layups in the opening period. Maryland won the rebounding battle and led by 5 points at the half.
Just about everything went wrong for the opening twenty minutes in Michigan’s first road game, but it stuck to the script.
The Wolverines weathered everything that Maryland could throw at them, even on the road, and then outlasted them and pulled away with another breezy victory. Michigan won the second half 56-33 — outscoring the Terps 1.69 PPP to 1 PPP in the final twenty minutes — and flew home with its perfect record intact.
An injury to Pharrel Payne changed the complexion of the game, but Michigan played with the composure of a team that knows its best stuff is good enough to win. It trusted the process, rode its best players, and got an All-American performance from Yaxel Lendeborg — 29 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and two steals — in his first Big Ten road game.
