In a hiatus from ranked matchups, the No. 7 Michigan women’s basketball team took care of business on the road against Rutgers and at home against Southern California. Thursday night, Wolverines coach Kim Barnes Arico secured her 300th career win with the program while in her home state. And in a down year for the Trojans, Michigan protected home court in a back-and-forth second half.
Although this past week didn’t present the Wolverines much trouble, the climb will only get steeper for them as they enter the back half of conference play.
This Past Week
Staying on the East Coast in New Jersey after suffering its second loss in the month of January to the Commodores, Michigan took on a Scarlet Knights squad that has only one conference win.
Safe to say the Wolverines made things look easy. With a 94-60 win over Rutgers, Michigan improved on many of the downfalls from the first half against Vanderbilt. The Wolverines conceded 13 turnovers but also moved the ball far more efficiently with 23 assists to the Scarlet Knights’ 10.
While Michigan got back in the win column, arguably more importantly, Barnes Arico secured her 300th win and became the first coach for the Wolverines — men’s or women’s — to reach that milestone.
“It just gives me a chance to reflect and be like, ‘Ooh, I’ve been here for a really long time, I think,’ ” Barnes Arico said. “… When I heard 300 I did the math, and I was like, wow, that means that we’re pretty consistent. And we had a, you know, I’ve had over 20 wins every single year, which is, which is what we’re trying to be. Obviously, we’re trying to win championships. So we still have a lot of goals to accomplish. But it means we’re heading in the right direction.”
