Mike Boynton Jr. appointed head coach in an interim capacity

Michigan formally acknowledged Dusty May’s departure and formally announced Mike Boynton Jr. as “head coach in an interim” capacity.

“With summer workouts starting this week, Mike Boynton has been appointed head coach in an interim capacity,” Warde Manuel said in a statement. “Mike has been an invaluable member of our staff and a respected leader throughout his career. He knows what Michigan Basketball represents and has earned the trust and respect of our student-athletes and everyone in our program.

“His experience, character, and commitment to our values make him the right person to guide the team during this transition.”

The NCAA clarified to ESPN that an interim appointment does not trigger the 15-day transfer portal. The current rules state that a 15-day window opens 5 days after a head coach is named or on the 31st day if no new coach is named. That means if Boynton keeps the interim title for the next month, the transfer window wouldn’t open until July 24th.

The Wolverines released this full statement from Warde Manuel, which also included his comments on Dusty May’s exit to the NBA:

While we are disappointed to see Dusty leave Michigan, we are deeply grateful to the May family for the lasting impact they have made on our program and our university.

In just two seasons, Dusty restored Michigan Basketball to national prominence and led our Wolverines through one of the greatest chapters in program history, culminating in our first national championship in 37 years. His leadership, vision, and belief in our student-athletes helped create a culture of excellence that made the entire Michigan community proud.

We thank Dusty for his commitment to our program and the University of Michigan, and we wish him, Anna, and their family continued success as he begins this next chapter with the Dallas Mavericks.

    This was the statement when Beilein left, notably including a quote from Beilein:

    “I was saddened when John told me this morning of his decision to leave Michigan for a head coaching position in the NBA. However, I am incredibly thankful for his 12 years of service to this university,” said Manuel. “Above and beyond being our all-time winningest coach, John is a tremendous role model for the game of college basketball. He is an outstanding educator, community member and a man of great integrity, and he and Kathleen will be missed. My priority now is to commence a full national search for our next basketball coach.”

    Feels like they don’t want to be caught not giving the job to Boyton without excluding a national search.
