Mike Boynton Jr. was officially announced as Michigan’s interim head coach on Tuesday after Dusty May’s move to Dallas. The new man in charge was in the green room with last year’s stars — who all were selected in the lottery — and was also interviewed by BTN’s Andy Katz on the B1G Show.
Here’s what Boynton told Katz in his first public interview after being appointed interim head coach, during which he discussed the role, Dusty May, roster retention, and more.
On when he found out Dusty May was leaving for Dallas:
“I found out Monday morning, just like everybody else. First of all, what a tremendous opportunity. Dusty is one of the elite basketball coaches in the world. I think he obviously did great work here at Michigan with us, and his record is going to continue to do well, and we’re excited tonight for these guys here at the draft, and for Michigan basketball, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to continue to lead us.”
On what Warde Manuel told him and the opportunity:
“Well, first is just recognizing the opportunity, what we did this year is obviously the ultimate of what can be accomplished at the University of Michigan, but it’s had that history of success for a long, long time, long before I was ever born, and it will continue that, and we’ve had, we’ve got really good players, really good resources, a great fan base, and I’m excited to serve our players in our program.”
On retaining the roster:
“We feel good about the relationships that our staff has with the players on the team, these guys all committed to come to Michigan to play together, and the team that we put together, we feel like can compete nationally, and certainly at the higher, higher end of the Big Ten, and those conversations are ongoing. I don’t want to speak for any of them. I’m glad for all the guys who’ve already made their intentions known, and I look forward to continuing to talk to the guys who haven’t officially and getting them on board as well.”
On how Michigan will play:
“We’ll continue to play the system that we played the last couple years with Dusty. We’ll play a lot through our ones and fives. Our wings will be dynamic playmakers and shooters, and we’ll continue to put guys in position to succeed as a team, but also to do what Morez, Aday and Yax are going to do tonight, walk across the stage, shake Adam Silver’s hand, hear the name called, and live out their NBA dreams.”

Nothing earth shattering here – but first public quotes I’ve seen from Boynton since taking over.

Who are the guys who have made their intentions known to stay besides McKenney?

Just McKenney AFAIK, Katz mentioned McKenney in the question, so I think the way Boynton answered was more just to not single anyone out.

Still think it’s wild how um is handling this, crickets from um when if it is Boynton they should be out selling it to people through the media. Instead they lost a generational coach and just aren’t saying anything.
