Incoming freshman forward Quinn Costello will stay at Michigan for 2026-27, he told Joe Tipton.
Costello is a 6-foot-10 forward who was one of the breakout prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. He’s an elite shooter with intriguing size, and played his way onto the McDonald’s All-American team. He’s ranked 32nd in the class, per 247 Sports Composite.
Costello is the 13th player to announce his intent to return to Michigan following Dusty May’s departure, joining Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, JP Estrella, Moustapha Thiam, Brandon McCoy and many others.
LJ Cason is the only player who has not announced his intentions for 2026-27. Cason is rehabbing an ACL injury he suffered at Illinois in February, but could play this season if healthy given the new five-in-five ruling. He originally followed Dusty May from Florida Atlantic to Michigan as a high school signee.

Shazam!! There you have it. Cason is definitely staying as well. So the whole team is back. Now we can focus on the season and have high expectations for this team.

Boynton is pulling off quite a coup so far. Just need LJ to complete the collection.
As important as it is to retain Beezy, Costello is a fascinating talent. It will be interesting to see what his PT looks like.

Boynton essentially retained the whole roster regardless. LJ was not expect to contribute.

OK, so this is huge and obviously we should all be excited about it. But, and I don’t think there was much hope, perhaps just a hint of a glimmer, that Kusterica would come to Michigan, but I think this announcement slams that door shut. It certainly does for me.
I was thinking yesterday that perhaps the reason Costello hadn’t announced his renewed commitment to Michigan is that he had to wait, just in case Kusterica would come, before making his final decision. Quinn is an amazing talent, and it’s going to be fun, and maybe frustrating at times, to see him develop into an NBA player. He has a great opportunity to play this year. Will he start? Nah, I don’t think so, certainly not early in the year, but he WILL play and he may play…a lot. Kusterica could have blocked that opportunity for Quinn, because he, too, is an amazing talent and NBA scouts already have their eye on this young talent for the 2028 draft. Even if they had competed head-to-head for opportunities, neck and neck, Nikola could have been a bit of a roadblock for Quinn. Costello wants to develop into an NBA player, too, and he wants that process to begin right away this year. He’s 19 years old so he wants to be in that lineup this year and then become a “star” next year. It would only make sense for him to wait and see what Nikola would do. That was my thought process and had been over the last few days as we waited.
If that is how it played out, am I disappointed that we got Quinn and not Nikola? Not at all, because while everything points to Nikola becoming a great player, I think Quinn has a good change to be really good, to be great, too. And Quinn wants to be at Michigan. He wants to be a part of this culture and play with these guys. Welcome aboard, young man. So happy to have you! Go Blue!
