As first reported by ESPN, Michigan is “working toward hiring” Mike Boynton Jr. as interim head coach to replace Dusty May, who took the Dallas Mavs job today.
Boynton has spent the last two years as one of Michigan’s top assistant coaches and has been integral in building the No. 1 defense in college basketball and spearheading recruiting efforts. Hiring him as interim head coach likely gives the Wolverines the best chance at retaining as much of their roster as possible.
“He’s an elite basketball coach,” May said in April during Michigan’s title run. “He did a really good job at Oklahoma State, especially considering the circumstances, and I’m not going to go on that soapbox. But he’s just as good as I am. I’m the head coach at Michigan. He’s just as good as I am. He’s just as prepared. He’s been invaluable for me. The best part about him is he covers my blind spots before they’re blind. There’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t call me and want to take something off of my plate that I haven’t thought of, and that’s what he is. He’s a forward thinker. He’s got a great feel for people.”
Boynton is just 44 years old and was the head coach at Oklahoma State from 2017 through 2024. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, Stephen F. Austin, South Carolina, Woffard and Coastal Carolina.

Boynton still has offset $$ with Oklahoma State, right? Is this about to be a coaching staff where the total $$ paid is less than Dusty alone made?

If this is for the next season as an interim. I just don’t understand what the bar will be.
if he manages to keep the roster together and get, like, a 4 seed and a sweet 16 is that good enough to be hired full time? Maybe? But it’s with a roster that isn’t his and has no bearing on how he will build future rosters or anything.

If this isn’t for like 72hrs what a joke

What does hiring him as an interim do as opposed to just ouright hiring him? Are there any benefits besides the fact we have an easy exit next year if it fails?
